Where has the time gone?

So, here it is seven months later, and I have not conitnued to post on my blog. Wow! Well, things just got really bad. My two-year-old had minor surgery, then I had surgery, then other family illnesses and distresses occurred. Work got crazy for my husband. And I got discouraged! Too discouraged to even face my dreams again.
Well, we have finally been making progress now. Both my husband and I are now admitted to the bar in a new state! Quite a task! After six months, I am fully recovered from surgery. We have been whittling away at possessions, though we still have too many. We have renters in one of our houses and a contract on it!
And, sadly, with the passing of my grandmother very recently and my parents decision to move away, our ties to this state have disappeared. We now have freedom and permission to leave.
I wish it were as easy as that.
We have a beautiful home here in a wonderful neighborhood. My children are happy. We have a network here. Starting a law frim here would be so easy for us. But that is not the dream. The dream is 2000 miles away. So, I must pump myself back up to make the change. What happened to my bridge?
Anyone else out there making a big life change? What is it? How are you doing it? I would really like to hear your story! Please share!

  1. Thank you for following "The Last Best Place". Did you know that I, too, have just moved from the East Coast to Washington State? Please email me. For some reason Google keeps telling me to start a blog instead of sending you a message. my email is wister87@#gmail.com. I love you blog title, so wistful and romantic.

  2. Sorry, that's wister87@gmail.com. So Portland is where you're thinking of going. I haven't been there, yet, but everybody from the Seattle area goes to Portland to shop. It is beautiful here. Sunny and never too hot all summer. Almost no rain in summer. And the scenery is just ravishingly gorgeous. Although, I know the south is gorgeous, too. But moving kids who are in school is hard. My son is 23 and wants to go to college here. He also loves outdoor activities and organic food. We're all very 'green'in Washington. I would think it's the same in Portland. It's hard to leave friends, too. But, when I lost my husband, I had to start over, so 3300 miles was about the same as 300 really, when you think of it. Hope some of this has been helpful. It was not my dream to move here. It was my son's dream to come back to the West Coast where he spent his early childhood, before we moved back to NJ. But I love it here. I think it was the right place to move to. Hope you enjoy my book, "The Last Best Place"!!!

  3. We came to Portland from Jackson, Mississippi in 2006, my widowed Mama and me--I'm a widow, too. My two sons came here first, the elder in 2000, the younger in 2003. None of us has ever looked back as far as thinking of moving back to Mississippi. Don't get me wrong, we love that state, our family and friends still there, the food, the music, and lots of energetic, forward-thinking people who make our hometown of Jackson better each day. We don't miss the heat, the humidity, the bugs and mosquitoes, or the still-in-evidence bigotry. Portland for us has been exactly what each of us needed for myriad reasons. If it weren't already past my bedtime, I could go on and on. I'll be back soon. If you want to communicate in e-mails, let me know and I'll get you my e-mail address.
